Giving back life-changing experiences through education.Converting schools under a tree to real schools One at a time .
We are just few volunteers who are blessed to live and work in North America wanting to give back to our roots in Tigray (Northern Ethiopia) by converting "a school" under a tree to a brick walled school, a reading station or Library.
The hope is to change the future of those kids attending school under a tree by getting education closer to their homes.
Unfortunately, due to the war in Tigray at the moment, all our efforts of building schools and reading stations have been stalled. Schools are closed across Tigray, the very children we sought to help being victims in many ways (rape, killing and torture) and whatever facilities they had being looted by neighboring state called Amhara & Fano Militias, neighboring state named Eritrea and it's army at the invitation of Ethiopia's federal government and its national army.
This has been going on since November 04th 2020 at which the US Secretary of State categorized as Ethnic cleansing and many call Modern day Genocide.
As a result, we are directing portions of the contributions towards humanitarian assistance of those very people that we have been trying to build schools for as they are being starved to death. due to the use of food as weapon by the mentioned parties including their own federal government of Ethiopia.
Driving through the rigid gravel roads of Tigray to visit my father's village in Medebay Zana (West Central Tigray... nearest town is Shire), we saw this 10-year-old girl walking home from school under the scorching heat of the summer sun. We later found the girl was headed to the same home that we were headed to, (My grand parents home where my Dad grew up) in which this little girl and her family now call home… Her mother is my second cousin.
Kids in rural Ethiopia walking the distance to go to school is not new but, this encounter with the little girl brought it home for me & it changed my life in a good way so, “Giving Back To Our Roots Inc” was born.
With your help, we are certain we will succeed in making a dent to this issue and change lives and communities one at a time by bringing education a bit closer to their home.... especially for those little ones that could not walk the distance.
Your donation will be applied to support our cause in building schools, Reading stations & Libraries as best fit for the area by consulting with local leaders and based on priorities. Due to the war in Tigray, schools are currently closed but the children we sought to help are victims are the war therefore, portions of the donations will be applied towards food assistance to those same victims.
Our vision is to equip the school with full curriculums (from sports to music, arts to science and everything in between) so, kids would enjoy coming to school and parents can see the benefit and support their kids. It will also be applied to buy books, computers & other essentials that would aid the kids stay in school & parents continue to support them.
In the USA, we are a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status therefore tax exempted and donations tax deductible.
Please contact us if you need further details and Thank you for being part of this journey!
Example of the thirst for education is clearly visible but books are usually One to Many due to the shortage..
This girl is reading at a reading station in her area to augment her education.
We hope to change one kids life at a time by giving them early education closer to home.
Providing meals and other essentials encourage kids and their families to stay in school - Often, families in poor countries including Ethiopia keep their kids home from school to help in the family farm, to herd a goat or often give under age girls to marriages to overcome economical challenges - We believe providing meals not only help provide good nutrition but also helps fight the economical challenges families face and help kids stay in school.
Please sign-up to hear about our progress and the fruition of your contributions.
